Learning Lab 5 - Diet & Nutrition

Session - Learning Lab - State Room 2
The “Renal Diet” has been cancelled: So, what do we tell patients about food?

Nutrition in Kidney Disease is changing. The traditional “Renal Diet” is fast becoming a thing of the past as we move towards a healthier, wholefood approach. Legumes, nuts, wholegrains, fruits and vegetables are back on the menu, and ultra-processed foods, additives, plant-based diets and gut health are all new areas of focus. The increased use of medications such as Ozempic are also influencing patients’ diets.

This can be a challenge for nursing staff who are often having conversations with patients about what they are eating, and have long had to focus on what patients should not eat. So how do we change our conversations with patients to reflect the latest evidence?

In this workshop we will go over the current evidence for nutrition in CKD, and how we communicate this with patients. Breakout sessions will focus on how we implement the most up to date evidence when having conversations with patients about hyperkalaemia, hyperphosphatemia, weight loss, fluid management and other issues you find challenging.
